There was a big demand to spread the word of God around Mawokota, specifically in the areas of Nkozi, Kankobe, Kitakyusa and Bulo – Mitala Maria Parish. The Idea of starting a new Parish from Mitala Maria to Nkozi was developed around 1925 by Pere J.M Stephant who was a Parish Priest of Mitala Maria by then.

He brought the Ideal to the laity of the above places mentioned and was given land in different places like Kitakyusa unfortunately, the land was not enough to accommodate the new Parish.

While at his pastoral visit to Kibubbu Sub-Parish Kavule (Now Nkozi), he was amazed to find a good place which is suitable for the God’s temple. Pere consulted the residents and approached the owner of the land “Omutaka Sserumaga” whom with his relatives agreed to offer the land where the church was constructed. Many more people of good will generously donated land on addition to that for the Parish.

OUR story

Our Lady of the Equator slogan, “ Totya, Situka, Ozimbe Eklezia wo”

In 1929, the construction work of the Parish Church was kick started by Pere Segond accompanied by the residents “Abataka”, he had a slogan “We came to work” “Bajja kukola” and later the place named ‘Nkozi”

While starting Nkozi, the White Fathers found a lot of challenges like, Mosquitoes, Witchcrafts and dangerous snakes.

Nkozi Parish church was officially finished and entered on Christmas day 1931, Was dedicated to “Our Lady of the Equator”. The white fathers did a great job and later handed over to Diocesan Priests.

From 1931 to date the Parish through the Priests has developed people both in spiritually and physically and also produced Parishes such: Kankobe, Kitakyusa and Bulo

On 3rd March 2023, our 92 year old church was partially destroyed by the heavy down pour and untill now the Parish Priest Fr. John Bosco Ssendagala together with the laity are joining hands to reconstruct a new God’s temple.
