Right Honorable-Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda

Speaking on the occasion of the World Day of Social Communications, celebrated under the theme “Speaking with the Heart,” The Honor-Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda urged everyone to engage in heartfelt and respectful communication. Saying that;
“Uganda is renowned for its vibrant and diverse culture, and it is crucial that our communication reflects the richness of our heritage. Even in times of disagreement and conflict, we should strive to speak with sincerity and listen with genuine intent. Our words should convey truth, love, and com- passion, while respecting the freedom and opinions of others”.
Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa
In today’s age, falsehood spreads faster than the truth. Social communication plays a vital role in shaping the sharing of information about church policies, systems, and actions as well as facilitating the exchange of ideas among Christians. Social media platforms have become powerful tools for instant and interactive communication with a potentially global audience. Therefore, we need to exercise awareness when using these platforms.

As believers, we must be cautious about how we speak to others, for our words have an impact. Being Ugandans with diverse cultures and heritage, the country is prone to conflicts and disagreements. Hence, I encourage everyone to embrace the idea of agreeing to disagree and engage in truthful, compassionate, and objective conversations while paying attention to the opinions of others.
Communicating cordially
As His Holiness Pope Francis reminds us, “communicating cordially means that those who read and listen to us are led to welcome our participation in the joys, fears, hopes, and sufferings of the men and women of our time.” It is our responsibility to understand and acknowledge the perspectives and experiences of those around us. Through empathetic and understanding communication, we can foster unity and harmony.

Pope Francis

“Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up according to their needs, that it may give grace to those who hear.”.
Ephesians 4:29
He concluded by urging fellow Christian brothers and sisters to approach each other’s perspectives and opinions with empathy. Saying, “Let us remember Ephesians chapter 4, verse 29, which advises us not to let corrupting talk come out of our mouths but rather to use speech that builds others up and ministers grace to the hearers”.
