The Uganda Episcopal Conference has announced the postponement of the national Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3rd, 2026, at Namugongo.

The Uganda Episcopal Conference emphasized that the commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs remains a profound witness of faith, courage, and fidelity to Christ.
Although the national gathering at Namugongo has been postponed, dioceses and parishes are encouraged to celebrate the day with the guidance of the Diocesan Bishop and the relevant Government authorities.
The bishops are urging all Catholics to remain calm, prayerful, united, and hopeful during this time.
The Church is also calling on the faithful to join in prayers for:
- The nation of Uganda
- Health workers on the front lines
- All those affected by the circumstances that led to the postponement
The bishops reminded everyone to follow the guidelines issued by the Government and the Ministry of Health.
The Uganda Episcopal Conference made a special appeal to media institutions to provide adequate coverage of the ongoing Ebola pandemic, which is understood to be a factor in the decision to postpone the national gathering.
While the large pilgrimage to Namugongo will not happen on June 3rd, the Church reminds us that the witness of the Uganda Martyrs continues to inspire the Church and the nation.
True faith is lived daily through love, sacrifice, truth, and fidelity to God.
The bishops concluded with a prayer: “May the Holy Martyrs of Uganda intercede for our nation and strengthen us in faith and unity.”
What This Means for Pilgrims
If you were planning to travel to Namugongo for the June 3rd celebrations, please consult your local parish leadership for guidance on how the day will be observed in your diocese. The national gathering has been postponed, but the feast of the Martyrs will still be honored in local celebrations.
We will share updates as more information becomes available from the Uganda Episcopal Conference.
